In the New Testament, the apostle Paul encourages the church to channel their freedom in Christ toward generosity in all aspects of life—including finances. In 2 Corinthians 8:6 he calls financial generosity an “act of grace”. On one hand, Paul’s choice of words articulates the purpose of our giving: to show God’s grace to others in word and works. On the other hand, Paul’s unique phrase reiterates the true motivation for our giving: the radical generosity of Jesus, “who became poor so that we might become rich.” (2 Cor. 8:9)
